catvāro vedā vijñātā bhavanti | ṛgvedo yajurvedaḥ sāmavedo
'tharvavedaś ceti |
tatra ṛgvedasyāṣṭabhedānāṃ śākhāḥ pañca bhavanti ||
āśvalāyanī śāṅkhāyanī śākalā bāṣkalā māṇḍūkeyāś ceti |
tatra śākalasya śiṣyāḥ pañca |
mudgalo gokhalo vātsyaḥ śārāraḥ śiśiras tathā |
pañcaite śākalāḥ śiṣyāḥ śākhābhedapravartakāḥ ||
tatra sarveṣām ucchinnatvād ṛgvedapārāyaṇāmnāye
śākalyaśaiśirīyakasaṃhitāpārāyaṇamiti prātiśākhyavṛttikārasiddhāntaḥ |
āśvalāyanasūtram ityādi prakṛtānupayukte na
vistāreṇa prapañcitam ||
Four Vedas are well-known. There are Ṛgveda,
Yajurveda, Sāmaveda and Atharvaveda There
are five branches of the eight varieties of the Ṛgveda:
Āśvalāyanī, Śāṅkhāyanī, Śākalā, Bāskalā and
Māṇḍukeyā. Among them Śākala had five disciples.
Mudgala, Gokhala, Vātsya, Śārāra as well as Śiśira were the five disciples
of Śākala who made the divisions of the branches. According to the opinion
of the commentator of the Prātiśākhya, in the tradition
of the Ṛgvedic recitation, there exists (only) the reading of the Śaiśirīya
Saṃhitā of the Śākala school as all (other branches) were lost. Since the
sūtras of Āśvalāyana etc. are not useful to the main
theme they are not discussed in details.
yajurvedaḥ ko vā iti vicārasya prakṛtatvāt tad eva vicāryate ||
tatra tāvat karmāṇi dvividhāni bhavanti | kānicit traividhakāni agnihotrādīni |
kānicid ekavedasādhyāni | svasvaśākhīyaṣoḍaśasaṃskārādīni tāny api
karmāṅgatraividhakabrāhmaṇabhojanāntāśīrvādapaṭhanenopacārāt traividhakāni bhavanti
| tatrāpi tattadvedatvena kroḍīkṛtānām eva traividhatvam | anyathā
vājasaneyāgnihotrasya traividhāntargatataittirīyayajurvedasādhyatvābhāve na

vāpīkūpataḍāgādisudhāpanāni sarvaśākhāsādhāraṇyena vidhāya nānāśāntikapauṣṭikādīnāṃ
kāmyānāṃ rudrānuṣṭhānalakṣahomakoṭihomādīnāṃ vānuṣṭhānaprasaṅgaḥ | tathā hi
tattatkarmānuṣṭhānapaddhatikārair maṇḍapapratiṣṭhāvasare likhitam | tad uktam | atha

dvitīyaṃ nṛsiṃhaprasāde pratiṣṭhāsāre sthaladvaye yajurvedavyākhyānam eva pramāṇaṃ|
tṛtīyaṃ caraṇavyūhe yajurvedalakṣaṇam eva |

caturyugeṣv athavyastā dvāparādau maharṣibhiḥ |
kṣīṇāyuḥkṣīṇasattvāñ ca durmedhān vīkṣya kālataḥ |
vedān brahmarṣayo vyastān svargatvāl lokabhāvanaḥ |
brahmeśādyair lokapālair yācito dharmaguptaye |
parāśarāt satyavatyām aṃśāṃśakalayā vibhuḥ |
avatīrṇo mahābhāga vedaṃ cakre caturvidham |
ṛgatharvayajussāmnāṃ rāśīr uddhṛtya vargaśaḥ |

devarātasutaḥ so 'pi viditvā yajuṣāṃ gaṇān |
tato gato 'tha munayo dadṛśus tān yajurgaṇān ||
yajūṃṣi tittirā bhūtvā tallolupatayādaduḥ |
taittirīyā iti yajuḥśākhā āsan sūpeśalāḥ ||
yājñavalkyas tato brahman chandāṃsy adhigaveṣayan |
guror avidyamānāni sūpatasthe 'rkam īśvaram|

yajurbhir akaroc chākhā daśa pañcadaśair vibhuḥ |
jagṛhur vājasanyas tāḥ kāṇvamādhyandinādayaḥ ||
ityādigranthaparyālocanayā yajurvedatyāgānantaraṃ devarātasutena
abrāhmaṇatvabhiyā savitā sūryo vājīrūpeṇa vājebhyaḥ kesarebhyaḥ vājena vegena vā
sannyastāḥ tyaktāḥ | śākhā vājasaneyasaṃjñā | śākhāraṇḍatvaparihārārthaṃ
cāturvedyatvasaṃkhyāsaṃrakṣaṇārthaṃ ca vājīrūpeṇa sūryeṇāyātayāmāni yāni yajūṃṣi
munaye vṛttāni tair yajurbhir uparatāni sa muninā vājasanyaḥ pañcadaśa śākhā akarot
| tasmāc ca muneḥ kaṇvamādhyandinādayaḥ adhyayanaṃ cakruḥ | te pañcadaśa bhavanti |
tasmād vaiśaṃpāyanādhyāpitamukhyayajurvedasya parimito nitarām atiśayena praśleṣo
nāma vibhāgas tena gadyamānatvān nigadākhyo yajurgaṇo yajurveda iti |
lakṣaṇākrāntatvāt tasya mukhatvam | vājasaneyināṃ tu gauṇatvam | upāstaṃ
yajuradhyayanamātram | pārāyaṇaṃ tu saṃhitāmātrasyeti | agre vakṣyāmaḥ |
dvitīyaṃ darśayati |

brahmaṇāṃ nodito vyāso vedān vyasyan pracakrame |
atha śiṣyān sa jagrāha caturo vedapāragān ||
ṛgvedaśrāvakaṃ pailaṃ sa jagrāha mahāmatiḥ |
vaiśampāyananāmānaṃ yajurvedasya cāgrahīt ||
jaiminiḥ sāmavedasya tathaivātharvavedavit |
sumantus tasya śiṣyo 'bhūd vedavyāsasya dhīmataḥ ||
prakṛtānupayukte tena ṛgvedavibhāgamupekṣya yajurvedasya vistaraṃ
bhāgam āha ||
yajurvedataroḥ śākhāḥ saptaviṃśan mahāmune |
vaiśampāyananāmāsau vyāsaśiṣyaś cakāra vai ||
śiṣyebhyaḥ pradadau tāś ca jagṛhus te 'py anukramāt ||
yājñavalkyas tu tasyābhūd brahmarātasuto dvijaḥ |
śiṣyaḥ paramadharmajño guruvṛttirataḥ sadā ||
ṛṣir yo 'dya mahāmerau samāje nāgamiṣyati |
tasya vai saptarātraṃ tu brahmahatyā bhaviṣyati ||
pūrvam evaṃ munigaṇaiḥ samayo yaḥ kṛto dvija |
vaiśampāyana ekas tu taṃ vyatikrāntavāṃs tathā ||
svastriyaṃ bālakaṃ so 'tha padā spṛṣṭam aghātayat |
śiṣyān āhūya bho śiṣyā brahmahatyāpahaṃ vrataṃ |
caradhvaṃ matkṛte sarvair na vicāryam idaṃ
tathā ||
athāha yājñavalkyas taṃ kim etair bahubhir dvijaiḥ |
kleśitair alpatejobhiś cariṣyeham idaṃ vrataṃ ||
tataḥ kruddho guruḥ prāha yājñavalkyaṃ mahāmunim ||
mucyatāṃ yat tvayādhītāṃ matto viprāvamānaka |
nistejasā vadasy etān yastvaṃ brāhmaṇadveṣṭinaḥ |
tena śiṣyeṇa nārtho 'sti mamājñābhaṅgakāriṇā ||
yājñavalkyas tataḥ prāha bhaktyaitat te mayoditaṃ |
mamāpy alaṃ tvayādhītaṃ yan mayā tad idaṃ dvija ||
ity utkvā rudhirāktāni sarūpāṇi yajūṃṣy atha
|
chardayitvā dadau tasmai yayau ca svechayā muniḥ ||
yajūṃṣy atha visṛṣṭāni yājñavalkyena vai dvijaḥ |
jagṛhus tittirā bhūtvā taittirīyās tu te tataḥ ||
brahmahatyāvrataṃ cīrṇaṃ guruṇā noditais tu yaiḥ |
carakādhvaryavas te tu caraṇān munisattama ||
yājñavalkyo 'pi mantreṇa prāṇāyāmaparāyaṇaḥ |
tuṣṭāva praṇataḥ sūryaṃ yajūṃṣy abhilikhya tataḥ ||
namaḥ savitre dvārāya mukter amitatejase |
ṛgyajussāmabhūtāya trayīdhāmātmane namaḥ ||
ityādi parāśara uvācetyantāṃ stutiṃ kṛtvā |
ity evamādibhis tena stūyamānaḥ stavai raviḥ |
vājīrūpadharaḥ prāha vriyatām abhivāñchitam ||
yājñavalkyas tathā prāha praṇipatya divākaram |
yajūṃṣi tāni me dehi yāni santi na me gurau ||
evam ukto dadau tasmai yajūṃṣi bhagavān raviḥ |
ayātayāmasaṃjñāni yāni na vetti tadguruḥ ||
yajūṃṣi yair adhītāni tāni viprair

vājinas te samākhyātāḥ sūryaśvo bho 'bhavac
ca naḥ ||
śākhābhedās tu teṣāṃ vai daśa pañca ca vājinām |
kaṇvādyās tu mahābhāga yājñavalkyapravartitāḥ ||
atha tṛtīyaṃ darśayati |
nṛsiṃhaprasādasādhāraṇamūrttipratiṣṭhāprasaṅgena |
prakṛtānupayuktatvāt pūrvato bahvṛco japet |

rudrān puruṣasūktaṃ ca ślokādhyāyaṃ tu śukriyam |
tathaiva maṇḍalādhyāyam adhvaryur dakṣiṇe japet ||
asyārthas tatraitāvān | namas te rudramanya ca
ityādi mantrān rudrān | puruṣasūktaṃ sahasraśīrṣā puruṣa ityādi || ślokādhyāyaḥ |
deva savitaḥ prasuva yajñaṃ prasuva || devasavitaretat te prāha tat pra ca suva pra
ca yajetyādī anuvākau | śukriyaṃ | satyaṃ prapadye | ṛtaṃ
prapadya ityādi | maṇḍalādhyāyaḥ | ādityo vā eṣa etanmaṇḍalam iti taittirīyakaḥ
prasiddhaḥ | sadakṣiṇadvāre japed ity arthaḥ | tatraiva kūpodyāpanaprasaṅgenāha ||
śākraṃ raudraṃ ca saumyaṃ ca kauśmāṇḍaṃ jātavedasam |
saurasūktaṃ japeyus te dakṣiṇena yajurvidaḥ ||
śākraṃ śakrasya | indraṃ vo viśvataspari havāmahe janebhyaḥ ity
anuvākaṃ | huve nu śakraṃ puruhūtam iti śakraliṅgam | raudraṃ suktam | imā rudrāya
iti ṣaḍṛcam || saumyasūktaṃ somo dhenu somo arvantamāśum iti ṣaḍṛcam || kūśmāṇḍam |
yad devā devaheḻanam iti catvāro 'nuvākāḥ | jātavedasaṃ sūktaṃ | yas tvā
hṛdākīriṇety anuvākaḥ | saurasūktaṃ | sūryo devīm iti bahvṛcaṃ | imāni sūktāni
taittirīyāṇāṃ prasiddhānīti | trivikramapaddhatau evam evety alam |
mantrabrāhmaṇayor vedas triguṇaṃ yatra paṭhyate |
yajurvedaḥ sa vijñeyo anye śākhāntarāḥ smṛtāḥ ||
iti yajurvedalakṣaṇam || asyārthaḥ | mantraś ca brāhmaṇaṃ ca
mantrabrāhmaṇe tayoḥ mantrabrāhmaṇayoḥ tayoś ca veda iti saṃjñā || tad uktaṃ
mantrabrāhmaṇayor veda iti nāmadheyam ity ṛkśākhīyaprātiśākhyabhāṣyakāreṇa |
āpastambasāmānyasūtrabhāṣyakārakapardinā dhūrtasvāminā ca | tathā sati mantro nāma
saṃhitā mantras tādṛk mantrarūpasaṃhitāyāḥ tanmadhye eva tadagre brāhmaṇatvena
paṭhanam ity ubhayathā 'pi saṃhitātvena padatvena kramatvena ca paṭhanaṃ triguṇaṃ
paṭhanam iti sa mantrabrāhmaṇayor vedas triguṇaṃ yatra paṭhyate ity arthaḥ |
etādṛśaṃ paṭhanaṃ śākhāyām adhyayanaṃ sa yajurvedas tac ca taittirīyaśākhāyām evāsti
|
tathā hi | sampaśyāmi prajā ahamiḍaprajasomānavīr iti saṃhitāmantraḥ
|| etasyaiva brāhmaṇaṃ saṃhitāyām eva tad agne eva | sampaśyāmi prajā aham ity āha
yāvanta eveti brāhmaṇam ity ubhayor api saṃhitātvena padatvena kramatvena paṭhane
triguṇitaṃ paṭhanaṃ bhavati |
etādṛśam udāharaṇāntaram āha | imām agṛbhṇan raśanām ṛtasya pūrva
āyuṣīti saṃhitāmantraḥ | etasyaiva brāhmaṇaṃ saṃhitāyām eva tad agne eva
saṃhitārūpeṇa vartate | tat katham ity apekṣāyām āha | imām agṛbhṇan raśanām
ṛtasyety aśvābhidhānīm ādatte iti brāhmaṇam | anayor api triguṇatvena paṭhanam |
evam anyāni bahuny api vākyāni santi | tāni vistarabhayān

anyac ca | agnihotraṃ vedatrayasādhyaṃ ṛgvedayajurvedasāmavedaiḥ
| tatra ṛcaiva hautraṃ yājuṣādhvaryavaṃ sāmnaudgīthaṃ tathā
ca sati āśvalāyanānāṃ sāmavedānāṃ vā agnihotraṃ svasvagṛhyasūtroktaṃ saprapañcaṃ na
dṛśyate | antaḥkāraṇābhāvāc chākhāntarīyam anuṣṭheyam |
vidvadbhis tad anuṣṭheyam agnihotrādikarma ced iti |
agnihotraṃ yajurvedaśākhāsu vihitam | etac ca bahvṛcaiḥ sāmagair
vānuṣṭhīyata ity uktaṃ |
atrāpi yajurvedaśabdena taittirīyaka eva | nanv āpastambādīnāṃ
pañcānām ekādhyayanatvāt | yajurvedaśabdena taittirīyakā eveti kuto niyamyate |
tatrāpi āpastambabaudhāyanobhābhyāṃ madhye ekena kartavyam iti sandeho 'bhidhīyate |
tad āpastambānām eva | prathamātikrame kāraṇābhāvādīn | āpastambābhāve
baudhāyanādikaṃ grāhyam iti prācīnagranthalekhanam || na tu vājasaneyinā |
ācārābhāvāt prācīnagranthalekhanābhāvāc ca |
tathā coktaṃ kapardikārikāyām |
trayīvidyātmakaṃ karma śrautaṃ tad abhidhīyate |
śrutismṛtyātmakaṃ karma smārtaṃ caiva tad ucyate |
yājurvedo bhave 'dhvaryur hotā ṛkśāhinas tathā |
udgātā sāmavedī ca śrautaṃ karma tridhātmakam |
ṛk_śākhoktaṃ ca hautraṃ tu adhvaryur yājuṣaḥ smṛtaḥ |
āpastambena kartavyaṃ sarvaṃ cādhvaryukarma ca |
āpastambasya cābhāve bodhāyanam athāpi vā |
ṛk_śākhibhiś ca sarvaiś ca hy āpastambena kārayet |
anyathā tu na kartavyaṃ śākhāvicchinnadarśanāt ||
adhvarodgātṛhotṝṇāṃ santi sūtrāṇy anekaśaḥ ||
yatrāsti yonisambandhaḥ sūtre jñātikulocitaḥ ||
yad vā triguṇapaṭhanaṃ trisvareṇa | udāttānudāttasvaritaiḥ
ṛgvedināṃ saṃhitāmātrasya | na brāhmaṇasya | taittirīyakā etādṛśaṃ
cādhyayanaṃ taittirīyāṇām eva | etad anyat śākhāntarā smṛtā iti | ko 'rthaḥ |
vaiśampāyanād guror adhītāyāṃ yājñavalkyena yajurvedasaṃhitāyāṃ
tattyāgānantaraṃ vājīrūpeṇa sūryeṇa vegena sannyastā vājasenyaḥ pañcadaśa
śākhābhedāḥ | śākhāntarā ekasyāḥ śākhāyāḥ |
anyaśākhā iti | śākhāntarā ityarthe kriyamāṇe ṛgveditvaṃ
sāmaveditvaṃ vā ātharvaṇaveditvaṃ vā pañcamatvaṃ vā syād ataś ca śākhāṃtarāḥ
śākhāyāṃ | antarbhūtayajurvedaśākhāntarbhūtā ity arthaḥ | āyātayāmāni yajūṃṣi
bhavantīti liṅgāt | eteṣāṃ pārāyaṇasaṃhitāmātrasyety alam iti prasaṅgena ||
pañcamam āha || yathā ṛgvedapārāyaṇe saṃhitāpārāyaṇaṃ padapārāyaṇaṃ
kramapārāyaṇaṃ ceti | tathā hi | kramapāṭhena vinā udāttādisvarasandehe nirāsamātraṃ sandehe nirāso na bhavati | iti
kramapaṭhanam āvaśyakatvena vinā saṃhitāpārāyaṇaṃ nārthavat |
ataś ca ṛgvedaśākhāyāṃ tritapārāyaṇam āvaśyam |
tad uktam āraṇyake | annādyakāmo nirbhurjaṃ brūyāt svargakāmaḥ
pratṛṇṇam ubhayakāma ubhyayam atareṇeti ||
asyārthaḥ || dvayoḥ padayor
akṣarayor vāpi sandhiḥ tasya avicchedādhyayanaṃ
taṃ nirbhujaṃ | saṃhitā pārāyaṇam ucyate || pade⸤akṣarebhudced vā saṃdhīm
akurvatā uccāraṇaṃ pratṛṇṇaṃ padapārāyaṇam ||
saṃhitāpadābhyām ubhābhyāṃ vyāptam ubhayam antareṇa kramapārāyaṇam
ity arthaḥ || tathā ca sati tribhiḥ kṛtvā svarāt svaraṃ vijānāti mātrāmātrāṃ hi
bhajate sā saṃhiteti | evam etāṃ saṃhitāṃ yo veda sandhīyate prajayā paśubhir yaśasā
brahmavarcasena svargeṇa lokena sarvam āyātīti | tasmāt kramād ṛte dvaipadasaṃhitā
dvaipadasvaraś ca na sidhyati | dvipadāsiddhe uttarārambhaḥ kartuṃ na śakyate | ataś
ca padārdharca ṛksūktasidhya bhagavatā pāñcālena sthā⸤pitānāṃ pārāyaṇakarmaṇāṃ kramapārārāyaṇam uttamaṃ

sandhāraṇaṃ bhavati idam ittham | evaṃ pāṭha iti svaramātrādirūpeṇa niścayo bhavati
| tathā yajurvedapārāyaṇe yajuṣāṃ bṛṃhaṇaṃ nāsasaṃdhāraṇaṃ
svaramātrādirūpeṇa idam ittham | evaṃ pāṭha iti niścayo bhavatīty atideśa ity alaṃ
prapañcena |
ṣaṣṭham āha | mahārṇavakārasamāptau caitā yajuṣā tarpayati | yasyāṃ
śākhāyām upākarmaṇi nityaṃ ca kāṇḍaṛṣyāditarpaṇaṃ sa yajurvedī prajāpatiṃ kāṇḍaṛṣīn
ityādi sadasaspatyantāḥ | etā homīyā devatāḥ pratyekaṃ yajurvedena saha tarpayati |
yajurvedapārāyaṇe yajurvedasya prādhānyam ucyate | ṛgvedapārāyaṇe kāṇḍaṛṣyādivarje
sviṣṭakṛtasthāne ṛkśākhīyā nityatarpaṇoktāḥ śatarcinādayo devatā grāhyāḥ | anyat
sarvaṃ samānam |
saptamaṃ darśayati | mahārṇavakāraḥ |
pavamānānuvākena śaṃ na indrānuvākataḥ |
śaṃ no vātānuvākena ghoṣayec chāntivācanam || iti |
śaṃ na indrānuvākena ity anena
āśvalāyanaśākhīyapaṭhitaghoṣayaśātir upalakṣyate | atra ca
vedakrameṇa prathamata iyaṃ śānti paṭhanīyā | paścād yājuṣī śāntiḥ | śaṃ no vātaḥ
pacatām ityādiyajurvedapaṭhitāḥ paṭhanīyāḥ | etatprasaṅgenaiva eteṣāṃ mantrāṇām
ṛṣidaivatacchandāṃsi darśayiṣyan | pratiṣṭhāsi pratiṣṭhāvanto bhūyāsmeti maṃtrasya
mayi parvatapūruṣaṃ mayi parvatavarcasaṃ mayi parvatabheṣajam | namo bhavāyetyādikāḥ
| namo rudrebhya ityādikāḥ | jayādihome cittaṃ ca svāhetyādayaḥ | anye py etajjātīyā
ye mantrās teṣāṃ yajustvāt chando'bhāva
ity uktam | anyac chando vartata iti siddhāntaḥ | tathā sati yajuśchando na vidyata
iti ko 'rthaḥ |
kiṃ sarvayajurvedaśākhīyānāṃ mantrāṇāṃ chando'bhāvaḥ |
uktamantraviśeṣāṇāṃ vā tatra na tāvatādyāḥ | mahārṇavakāreṇa sarveṣāṃ darśitatvāt na
dvitīyaḥ | mantraviśeṣānirvacanāt | atrocyate |
nigadākhyaṃ yajurgaṇa yajurveda ity atrāntaḥpātiyajurvedaśabdena
aniyatākṣarāvasānayajur iṣe tvorje tveti yajuḥ | āśvalāyanāraṇyakabhāṣye |
gadyātmakayajurveda iti śrīdharaḥ | vākyaṃ yajur iti
yajurvedaśākhinaḥ | tatra mantrātmakāmantrātmakayajurgaṇasya sakalasyāpi
chando'bhāvaḥ | yajuḥsamudāyātmakamantrāṇāṃ sarvatra chanda
iti taittirīyakayājurvedīnāṃ śāstrasiddhāntaḥ |
aṣṭamam āha | tatra sṛṣṭiprasaṅgena manubhāṣyakāro medhātithiḥ |
agnivāyuravibhyaś ca trayaṃ brahma sanātanam |
dudoha yajñasiddhyartham ṛgyajuḥsāmalakṣaṇam ||
asyārthaḥ | prajāpatiḥ ṛgyajuḥsāmalakṣaṇaṃ sanātanaṃ brahma
yajñasiddhyarthe dudoha ātmānam iti dvitīyaṃ karmakebhyaḥ agnivāyuravibhyaḥ dohanaṃ
cādhyayanaṃ || tatrādau agneḥ sakāśād agnimīḻeti ṛgvedam adhītavān | vāyoḥ sakāśād
iṣe tvorje tveti yajurvedam adhītavān | bhūr bhuvaḥ svar iti etāvān vyāhṛtayaḥ ime
trayo vedā bhūr ity eva ṛgvedo bhuva iti yajurvedaḥ svar iti sāmavedaḥ | iti
ṛgvedāraṇyake uktam |
anyac ca | ṣakārānto iṣuśabdaḥ annavācakaḥ |
tathā sati iḍannaṃ tanmadhyasthānatvād vāyunā varṣadānena
kriyate
itīṣe tvā | ṛkprāṇarūpo vāyuḥ so 'pi śvāsocchvāsābhyām adhyayane hetur bhavati
| annādyād ito vāyukāryasambandhena
vāyor janyayajurvedaḥ | tasya ca adhītā | tasmād asyāṃ daśāyāṃ vāyoḥ sakāśāt
prajāpatir yajurveda iṣe tvorje tveti adhītavān | tasyāṃ daśāyāṃ āvaiśampāyanaṃ
sūpadiṣṭa ayātayāma ikhe tvorje tveti vājasaneyapāṭhābhāvāt | yātayāma iṣe tvorje
tveti evamākāraka eva yajurveda iti |
atha navamam āha | sāmānyasūtrabhāṣyakāraḥ |
caturvedanirūpaṇaprasaṅgena |
yadāgneyo 'ṣṭākapālo 'māvāsyāyāṃ ca paurṇamāsyāṃ cācyuto
bhavatītyādibhir vākyair yajurvedapaṭhitatvāt |
atraivaṃ daśamaṃ darśayati | tac ca
hemādrimādhavanṛsiṃhaprasādakālādarśaprayogapārijātādinibandheṣu
upākarmanirṇayaprasaṅgena vyākhyātam | tathāhi |
adhyāyānām upākarma śrāvaṇyāṃ śravaṇena vā |
hastenauṣadhibhāve vā pañcamyāṃ śravaṇena vā ||
iti āśvalāyanaḥ | athāto 'dhyāyopākaraṇam oṣadhīnāṃ prādurbhāve
śravaṇena śrāvaṇasya pañcamyāṃ hastena veti |

śrāvaṇyāṃ prauṣṭhapadyāṃ vāpy upākṛtya yathāvidhiḥ |
yuktaś chaṃdāṃsy adhīyīta māsān vipro 'rdhapañcama
ityādivākyeṣu sarveṣāṃ śākhīnāṃ copākarmaṇi vyavasthitaḥ |
kāṇḍaviśeṣāḥ śrūyante || ataś cedaṃ vyavasthāpakaṃ vacanam |
upākarma prakurvati kramāt sāmayajurvidaḥ |
grahasaṅkrāntyayukteṣu hastaśravaṇaparvasu ||
dhaniṣṭhāpratipadyuktaṃ tvāṣṭraṛkṣasamanvitam |
śrāvaṇakarma kurvanti ṛgyajuḥsāmapāṭhakāḥ ||
grahasaṅkrāntyarahitāḥ śrutiparvakarāḥ kramāt |
paraviddhā upādeyā ṛgyajuḥsāmaśākhibhiḥ ||
ityādivākyaparyālocanayā ṛgvedinām udayakālīnaḥ śravaṇaḥ |
yajurvedinām udayakālīnaparva | sāmavedinām udayakālīno hasta iti vyavasthitam |
tathaiva svasvagṛhye pratipādanāt | atra ca dhaniṣṭhāpratipadyuktam iti vākye
udayakāle vyāpinyāṃ paurṇmāsyāṃ yajurvedibhir uṣākarma kartavyam ity uktam | atra
yajurvedaśabdena taittirīyakā evocyante | hemādryādinibandhakāraiḥ | tathā hi |
caturdaśyāṃ samutpannāv asurau madhukaiṭabhau |
vedān svīkurvataḥ padmayones tau jahratuḥ śrutīḥ ||
hatvā tāv asurau devaḥ pātālatalavāsinau |
āhṛtya tāḥ śrutīs tasmai dadau lokaguruḥ svayam ||
abhūl labdhaśrutir brahmā parvaṇyaudayike punaḥ |
ato bhūtayute tasmin nopākaraṇam iṣyate |
asuraṃ varjayet kālaṃ vedāharaṇaśaṅkayā ||
bhaved upākṛtiḥ paurṇamāsyāṃ pūrvāhṇa eva tu |
brāhmaṇān bhojayet tatra pitṝn uddiśya devatāḥ ||
samprāpte śrāvaṇasyānte pūrṇamāsyā dinodaye |
snānaṃ kurvīta matimān śrutismṛtividhānataḥ ||
tato devān pitṝṃś caiva tarpayet paramāmbhasā |
upākarmādi caivoktaṃ ṛṣīṇāṃ caiva tarpaṇam ||
kurvīta brāhmaṇaḥ śrāddhaṃ vedān uddiśya bhaktitaḥ
ityādivākyeṣu udayavyāpinyāṃ paurṇamāsyām upākarma kartavyam | tac
ca taittirīyakaiḥ |
parvaṇy audayike kuryuḥ śrāvaṇyāṃ taittirīyakāḥ |
bahvṛcāḥ śravaṇe kuryur grahasaṅkrāntivarjite || iti
anye tu pūrvaviddhām eva | tathā coktaṃ |
śrāvaṇī durganavamī tathā dūrvāṣṭamī ca yā |
pūrvaviddhā prakartavyā śivarātrir baler dinam ||
tasmāt pūrvodāhṛtavākyabalād yajurvedinām udayavyāpinyām upākarma |
śākhāntarāṇāṃ vājasanīyānāṃ pūrvaviddhām eva | grahasaṅkrāntiyukte
tasmiṃs taittirīyakaiḥ proṣṭhapadyāṃ kartavyam |
tathā ca - - - - sūtram |
saṅkrāntigrahaṇaṃ vāpi paurṇamāsyāṃ yadā bhavet |
upākṛtis tu pañcamyāṃ kāryā vājasaneyibhiḥ ||
saṅkrāntigrahaṇaṃ vāpi yadi parvaṇi jāyate |
tanmāse hastayuktāyāṃ pañcamyāṃ vā tad iṣyate ||
śrāvaṇyāṃ paurṇamāsyāṃ prauṣṭhapadyāṃ vā saha śiṣyair
adhyāyopākarmety evaṃrūpe pañcamyāṃ śrūyamāṇatvān na taittirīyakāṇāṃ pañcamī |
athāto 'dhyāyopākarma śrāvaṇyāṃ paurṇamāsyāṃ śrāvaṇasya
śuklapañcamyāṃ hastayuktāyāṃ vety evaṃrūpe paurṇimāpañcamīhastānāṃ vikalpena
vājasanīyānām upādānaṃ |
tatrāpi harihareṇa tacchākhīyapaddhatikāraiḥ
paurṇamādikālacatuṣṭayaṃ yathāsambhave yatra yatra kriyate tatra tatra mādhyāhnikaṃ
karma kṛtvopākarma kartavyam iti | caturṇām api pūrvaviddhatvam uktam |
tathā ca taittirīyakapadopetavākyeṣu vājasanīyapadopetavākyeṣu
nopalakṣaṇatvam | tathaiva vyākhyānakālanirṇayakārair draṣṭavyam | tasmāt
sarvaśrutismṛtipurāṇeṣu yatra yatra yajurvedaśabdas tatra tatra taittirīyakapara eva
| na vājasaneyīparaḥ | yajurvedādivājasaneyivyākhyānābhāvāt | vinigamanāviharaś ca |
yatra vedasādhāraṇaḥ parvādinirṇayaḥ tatra vājasaneyīnāṃ bhinna evety alam ||
prayogapārijāte śrāddhakāṇḍe | saurapurāṇe |
aṅgavaṅgakaliṅgāṃś ca saurāṣṭrān gurjarāṃs tathā |
ābhīrān kauṅkaṇāṃś caiva drāviḍān dākṣaṇāyanān ||
āvantyān māgadhāṃś caiva brāhmaṇāṃś ca vivarjayet |
naikagotre havir dadyāt samānapravare 'pi vā |
na vājñātakule dadyād yathā kanyā tathā haviḥ ||
abhāve 'py anyagotrāṇāṃ svagotrān api bhojajayet |
svagotraṃ bhojayec chrāddhe svagotre yajñakarmaṇi |
dānaṃ dadyāt svagotrāya kanyādānaṃ ca varjayet ||
guṇavatāṃ teṣām abhāve śrutādhyayanasampannāḥ saptamād arvāk ca
bhojanīyāḥ

iti caturthe dādyāni brāhmaṇān parasparayajñavivāhayajñādi śrautasmārte
ca kriyata iti |
na tu vājasanīyānām | āpastambī bodhāyanī satyāṣāḍhī hiraṇyakeśī
augheyī ceti | ete pañca sūtrādyā eteṣām āpastambasūtraṃ prabalam | etair eva
sūtrair vyākhyā bhagavatā vyāsena kapardisvāminā dhūrtasvāminā hariharadattena
