[1] athāto vedotpattim adhyāyaṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ |
[2] atha khalu bhagavantam amaravaram ṛṣigaṇaparivṛttam āśramasthaṃ kāśirājaṃ divodāsam aupadhenava vaitaraṇaurabhra puṣkalāvata karavīra gopurarakṣita bhoja suśruta prabhṛtaya ūcuḥ |
[3] bhagavañ śārīramānasāgantubhir vyādhibhir vividhavedanābhighātopadrutān sanāthān anāthavad viceṣṭamānān vikrośataś ca mānavān abhisamīkṣya manasi naḥ pīḍābhavat |
[4] teṣāṃ sukhaiṣiṇāṃ rogopaśamārtham ātmanaś ca prāṇayātrārtham āyurvedaṃ icchāma upadiśyamānam | atrāyattam aihikam āmuṣmikañ ca śreyas tad bhagavantam upasannāḥ smaḥ śiṣyatveneti |
[5] tān uvāca bhagavān svāgatam vaḥ sarva evāmīmāṃsyā adhyāpyāś ca bhavanto vatsāḥ |
[6] iha khalv āyurvedo nāma yad upāṅgam atharvavedasyoktam anutpādyaiva ca prajāḥ ślokaśatasahasram adhyāyasahasrañ ca kṛtavān svayambhūr alpāyuṣkālpamedhastvañ cālokya narāṇām bhūyo 'ṣṭadhā praṇītavān |
[7] tad yathā śalyaṃ śālākyaṃ kāyacikitsā bhūtavidyā kaumārabhṛtyam agadatantraṃ rasāyanatantraṃ vājīkaraṇatantram iti |
[8] athāsya pratyekāṅgalakṣaṇasamāsaḥ |
[9] tatra śalyan nāma vividhatṛṇakāṣṭhapāṣāṇapāṃsulohaloṣṭāsthibālanakhapūyāsrāvaduṣṭavraṇāntargarbhaśalyoddharaṇārthaṃ yantraśastrakṣārāgnipraṇidhānaviniścayārthañ ca ṣaṣṭyābhidhānair iti |
[10] śālākyatantran nāmorddhvajatrugatānāṃ vikārāṇāṃ śravaṇanayanavadanaghrāṇādisaṃśritānāṃ vikārāṇām upaśamakaraṇārtham |
[11] kāyacikītsā nāma sarvaśarīrāvasthitānāṃ vyādhīnām upaśamakaraṇārthaṃ jvaraśophagulmaraktapittonmādāpasmārapramehātisārādīnāñ ca |
[12] bhūtavidyā nāma devagandharvayakṣarākṣasapitṛpiśācavināyakanāgagrahopasṛṣṭacetasāṃ śāntikarmabaliharaṇādigrahopaśamanārthaṃ |
[13] kaumārabhṛtyan nāma kumārabharaṇadhātrīkṣīradoṣasaṃśodhanārthaṃ duṣṭastanyagrahasamutthitānāñ ca vyādhīnām upaśamakaraṇārtham |
[14] agadatantran nāma sarpakīṭadaṣṭaviṣavyañjanārthaṃ vividhaviṣavegopaśamanārthañ ca |
[15] rasāyanatantran nāma vayaḥsthāpanam āyurmedhākaraṇaṃ vyādhyupaśamakaraṇārthañ ca |
[16] vājīkaraṇatantran nāma svalpaduṣṭakṣīṇaviśuṣkaretasāṃ śukrāpyāyanaprasādopacayajanananimittaṃ praharṣajananārthañ ca |
[17] evam ayam āyurvedo 'ṣṭāṅga upadiśyate | atra kasmai kiṃ varṇyatām iti |
[18] ta ūcur asmākaṃ sarvam eva śalyajñānam upadiśatu bhagavān iti |

[20] ta ūcur bhūyo 'smākaṃ sarveṣām evaikamatīnāṃ matam abhisamīkṣya suśruto bhagavantaṃ prakṣyati | asyopadiśyamānaṃ vayam apy upadhārayiṣyāmaḥ |

[22] iha khalv āyurvedaprayojanaṃ vyādhyupasṛṣṭasya vyādhiparimokṣaḥ svastharakṣaṇañ ca | āyur asmin vidanty anena vāyur vidyata ity āyurvedaḥ | tasyāṅgavaram āgamapratyakṣānumānopamānair aviruddham ucyamānam upadhārayadhvam |
[23] etad dhy aṅgaṃ prathamaṃ pradhānaṃ prāgabhihitvād vraṇasaṃrohaṇakaratvād yajñaśiraḥpradhānasandhānāc ca | śrūyate hi yathā purā rudreṇa śiraś chinnam aśvibhyāṃ punaḥ sandhitam iti |
[24] aṣṭānām api cāyurvedatantrāṇām etad evādhikam āśukriyākaraṇād yantraśastrakṣārāgnipraṇidhānāt sarvatantrasāmānyāc ca |
[25] tad idaṃ śāśvataṃ puṇyaṃ svargyaṃ yaśasyam āyuṣyaṃ vṛttikarañ ca |
[26] tad brahmā provāca tat prajāpatir adhijage tasmād aśvināv aśvibhyām indra indrād ahaṃ mayā tv iha pradeyam arthibhyaḥ prajāhitahetoḥ |

    • The Nepalese witnesses use the abbreviation "bha" for "bhavati cātra", introducing the next verse.
[27] ahaṃ hi dhanvantarir ādidevo jarārujāmṛtyuharo marāṇāṃ |
śalyam mahacchāstravaraṃ gṛhītvā prāpto 'smi gāṃ bhūya ihopadeṣṭuṃ |
[28] tatrāsmin śāstre pañcamahābhūtaśarīrisamavāyaḥ puruṣa ity ucyate | tasmin kriyā so 'dhiṣṭhānaṃ | kasmāt | lokadvaividhyāl loko hi dvividhaḥ* sthāvaro jaṅgamaś ca | dvividhātmaka evāgneyaḥ saumyaś ca tadbhūyastvāt pañcātmako vā | tatra caturvidho bhūtagrāmaḥ saṃsvedajādrijajarāyujāṇḍajasaṃjñaḥ | tasmin puruṣaḥ pradhānas tasyopakaraṇam anyat | tasmāt puruṣo 'dhiṣṭhānaṃ |
    • The reading of dvividhan might be a corruption of dvividhas, which is a permitted sandhi.

    • kuṭṭha is Prākṛta for "skin disease, leprosy," but this sense does not fit this passage; the word here must refer to an insect or similar creature. In our MSS, kuṭṭha appears to be the transmitted form, possibly Sanskritized to kuṣṭha by the scribe of MS H. It is not obvious how it could be a scribal error for the Vulgate's "kīṭa."
[33] tatra sthāvarebhyas tvakpatrapuṣpaphalamūlakandakṣīraniryāsasārasnehasvarasāḥ prayojanavantaḥ | jaṅgamebhyaś carmaromanakharudhirādayaḥ |

1 athātaḥ śiṣyopanayanīyam adhyāyaṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ ||
2 brāhmaṇakṣatriyavaiśyānām anyatamam anvayaḥ | vayaḥ śaurya śaucācāra vinaya śakti bala medhā dhṛti smṛti pratipattiyuktan tanujihvauṣṭhadantāgram ṛjuvaktrākṣināsaṃprasannacittavākceṣṭaṃ kleśasahañ ca śiṣyam upanayet | sa hi guṇavān tasmai deyam ato|| viparītaguṇan nopanayet |
3 śūdram api guṇavantam anupanītam adhyāpayed ity eke | upanayanīyan tu brāhmaṇam praśasteṣu tithikaraṇamuhūrttanakṣatreṣu praśastāyān diśi śucau deśe gocarmamātraṃ sthaṇḍilam upalipya darbhasaṃstaraṇam ahitaṃ kṛtvā puṣpair dhūpair janvair bhankais ca pūjayitvā palāśodumvarabilvānāṃ samidbhir ghṛtam aktābhir dārvīhomikenāgnim upasamādhāyā ṇḍya huyāt | pratidevatam ṛṣibhyaḥ śiṣyaṃ svāhākāraṃṅ kārayet |

5 tato 'gniṃ pariṇīyāgnisākṣikaṃ śiṣyaṃ brūyāt | kāmakrodhalobhamohamānāhaṃkārerṣyāmātsarya pārūṣya paiśunyānṛtālasyāsyayaśasyāni hitvā kāṣāyavāsasā nīcanakharomṇā trirātraṃ śucinā satyabrahmacaryābhivādanapareṇa bhavitavyaṃ | mamānumatasthānagamanaśayanāsanabhojanādhyayanapareṇa bhūtvā matpriyahiteṣu varttitavyam ato'nyathā varttamānasyādharmmo bhavaty aphalā ca vidyā na ca prākāśyaṃ prāpnuyāt |
6 aham vā tvayi samyag varttamāne yady ananyathādarśā syāt tadeva nāsau bhāgyavidyāphalabhāk ca bhaveyaṃ |
7 yasmād arogavatā dharmmāsau'rthakāmamokṣāḥ prāpyante |
8 tasmād dvijadaridrasādhvanāthābhyupagatapāśaṇḍasthitānām ātmabāndhavānām ivātmabheṣajaiḥ | pratikartavyam evaṃ sādhu bhavati | vyādhaśākunikapatitapāpakarttṝṇāñ ca na pratikarttavyam evaṃ vidyā prakāśate | mitradharmakāmayaśāṃ micā vāpnoti ||

10 kṛṣṇāṣṭamī tannidhane 'hanī dve
śuklādaye'py evam ahar dvisandhyaṃ |
akālavidyutstanayitnughoṣe
svatantrarāṣṭrakṣitipavyathāsu |

tathautsavaotpātikadarśaneṣu |

Adhyāya 6

1athāto ṛtucaryaṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ ||
kālo hi bhagavāṃ svayambhur anādimadhyanidhano 'tra rasavyāpatsampattayo jīvitamaraṇe ca manuṣyāṇām āyatte ssa sūkṣmām api kalān na līyata iti kālaḥ | saṅkalayati kalayati vā bhūtānīti kālaḥ |
tasya samvatsarātmano bhagavān ādityo gativiśeṣeṇa nimeṣakāṣṭhākalāmuhūrttāhorātrapakṣamāsartvayanasamvatsarayugapravibhāgaṃ karoti |
tatra laghvakṣinipātamātronimeṣaḥ | pañcadaśanimeṣā kāṣṭhā triṅśatkāṣṭhā kalā | viṅśatikalāmuhūrttaḥ kalāyāḥ daśabhāgaś ca | triṃśatmuhūrttam ahorātraṃ | pañcadaśāhorātraḥ pakṣaḥ | sa dvividhaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ śuklaś ca tau māsaḥ |
tatra māghādayo dvādaśamāsāḥ samvatsaraḥ | dvimāsikamṛtuṅkṛtvā ṣaḍṛtavo bhavanti || te ca śiśiravasantagrīṣmavarṣāśaraddhemantāḥ | teṣān tapastapasyau śiśiraḥ | madhumādhavau vasantaḥ | śuciśukrau grīṣmaḥ nabhonabhasyau varṣā | iṣorjau śarat | sahassahasyau hemanta iti |
ta ete śītoṣṇavarṣavātalakṣaṇāḥ | candrādityayoḥ kālavibhāgakaratvādayane dve bhavataḥ | dakṣiṇamuttarañ ca | tayordakṣiṇamvarṣāśaraddhemantāḥ teṣu bhagavānāpyāyate somaḥ | āmlalavaṇamadhurāś ca rasā balavanto bhavanti | uttarottarañ ca sarvaprāṇināṃ balam abhivarddhate | uttaraṃ śiśiravasantagrīṣmāḥ | teṣu bhagavān āpyāyate rkaḥ | kaṭutiktakaṣāyāś ca rasā balavattarā bhavanti | uttarottaraś ca prāṇinām balam parihīyate ||

atha khalv ayane yugapat samvatsasaro bhavati | te dve ayane varṣasamvatsaraḥ parivatsaraḥ iḍāvatsaraḥ vatsara ity evaṃ paṃcapañca varṣāni || te pañca yugam iti saṃjñā labhante sa eṣa nimeṣādir yugaparyantaḥ kālaś cakravat parivarttamānaḥ kālacakra ity ucyate |
evaṃ dakṣiṇāyane rātrir vyākhyātā ||
iha tu varṣāśaraddhemantavasantagrīṣmaprāvṛṣaḥ ṣaḍṛtavo bhavanti | doṣopacayaprakopapraśamanimittaṃ | te tu bhādra padādyair dvimāsike naivaṃ vyākhyātāḥ | tadyathā | bhadrapadāśvayujau varṣāḥ kārttikamārgaśīrṣau śarat | pauṣamāghauhemantaḥ | phālgunacetrau vasantaḥ | vaiśākhajyeṣṭhau grīṣmaḥ | āṣāḍhaśrāvaṇau prāvṛḍiti ||
tatra varṣā svauṣadhyastaruṇyolpavīryā āhāratvam upagatā vidahyante | āpaścāpraśāntāḥ kṣitimalaprāyāstāstāstūpayujyamānā nabhasi meghāvatate jalapraklinnāyāṃ bhūmau klinnadehānāṃ dehināṃ śītavātavarṣaviṣṭambhitāgnīnāṃ vidahyante | sa vidāhāt pittasañcayam āpādayanti | sa sañcayaḥ śaradi praviralameghe viyaty upaśuṣyati paṅkerkakiraṇapravilāyitaḥ paittikāṃ vyādhīṃ janayati | tā evauṣadhyaḥ kālapariṇāmātpariṇatavīryā balavatyo hemante bhavanti | āpaś ca praśāntāḥ snigdhā atyarthaṃ gurvyastā upayujyamānāḥ mandakiraṇatvād bhānossatuṣāraupaṣṭambhitadehānāṃ dehinām avidagdhāḥ snehād gauravād upalepitvāc ca śleṣmaṇassañcayam āpādayanti | sa saṃcayo vasanterkakiraṇapravilāyitaḥ śleṣmikāṃ vyādhīṃ janayati | tā evauṣadhyau grīṣmaniḥsārā rūkṣā atimātralaghvyo bhavaty āpaś ca tā upayujyamānāḥ tatra śaraddhemantayor madhyasamam ahorātraṃ yugapac cādhimāsakau bhavataḥ | viṃśatikāṣṭhāś caikanimeṣārdhaś ca dinapariparivṛddhir uttarāyaṇe | sūryapratāpopaśoṣitadehānān dehināṃ raukṣyāl laghvāc ca vāyoḥ sañcayam āpādayanti | sa sañcayaḥ prāvṛṣi cātyarthaṃñ jalopaklinnāyāṃ bhūmau cātiklinnadehānāṃ dehināṃ śītavātavarṣerito vātikāṃ vyādhīṃñjanayati | evam eṣāṃ doṣāṇāṃ sañcayaprakopahetur uktaḥ |
tatra varṣāhemantagrīṣmeṣu sañcitānān doṣāṇāṃ śaradvasantaprāvṛṭsu ca prakupitānāṃ nirharaṇaṃ |
tatra paittikānāṃ vyādhīnāṃ hemante vyupaśamaḥ | śleṣmikāṇānnidāghe vātikānāṃ śaradi | svabhāvatas tv ete sañcayaprakopaśamā vyākhyātāḥ ||
tatra divasapūrvāhṇe vasantaliṅgaṃ | madhyāhne grīṣmasya | aparāhṇe prāvṛḍliṅgaṃ | pradoṣe vārṣikaṃ | śāradam ardharātre | pratyuṣasi haimanam upalakṣayet | evam ahorātram api varṣam iva śītoṣṇavarṣadoṣopacayaprakopopaśamair jānīyāt
tatrāvyāpane tu ṣvavyāpannā oṣadhayo bhavanty āpaś ca | tās tūpayayujyamānāḥ prāṇāyurbalavīryaujaskaryo bhavanti |
tāsām punar vyapadodṛṣṭakāritāni śītoṣṇavātavarṣāṇi | khalu viparītāny auṣadhīr vyāpādayanty āpaś ca |
tāsām upayogād vividharogaprādurbhāvo marako vā bhavati |
śāparakṣaḥ krodhād adharmair uṣasyante janapadāḥ | viṣauṣadhipuṣpagandhena vā vāyunopanītena | kāsaśvāsapratiśyāyaśirorogajvarair upatapyante prajāḥ grahanakṣatracaritair vā | śayanāsanayānavāhanam aṇiratnopa karaṇagarhitalakṣaṇaprādurbhāvair vā
jāto 'tra | parityāgaśāntiprāyaścittabalimaṅgalajapahomopahārejyāñjalinamaskārataponiyamadayādānadīkṣābhyupagamadevatābrāhmaṇaguruparair bhavitavyam evaṃ sādhu bhavati ||

athātaḥ karṇṇavyadhavidhim vyākhyāsyāmaḥ ||1||
rakṣābhūṣaṇanimittam bālasya karṇṇau vyadhayet | tau ṣaṣṭhe māse saptame vā śuklapakṣe praśasteṣu tithikaraṇamuhūrttanakṣatreṣu kṛtamaṅgalaṃ svastivācanan dhātryaṅke kumāram upaveśyābhisāntvayamāno bhiṣag vāmahastenākṛṣya karṇṇan daivakṛte chidre dakṣiṇahastena ṛju vidhyet | pūrvvan dakṣiṇaṃ kumārasya vāmaṅ kanyāyāḥ | pratanuṃ sūcyā bahalam ārayā ||2|| *
    • Ḍalhaṇa records the alternative reading bhakṣyaviśeṣair vā before bālakrīḍanakaiḥ pralobhya in the vulgate.
śoṇitabahutvanivedanāyāñ cānyadeśaviddham iti jānīyāt | nirupadravatā taddeśaviddhaliṅgam ||3||*
    • At this point, witness K is missing a folio, so the rest of this chapter is constructed on the basis of witnesses N and H.
tatra yadṛcchāviddhāyāṃ sirāyām ajñena jvara dāhaśvayathu vedanā granthi manyāstambhāpatānakaśirograhakarṇṇaśūlāni bhavanti ||4||
doṣasamudayād apraśastavyadhād vā tatra varttim apahṛtya yavamadhukamañjiṣṭhāgandharvvahastamūlair mmadhughṛtapragāḍhair ālepayet | surūḍhañ cainam punar vvidhyet ||5|| *
    • Ḍalhaṇa (1.16.6) states that some do not read surūḍhañ cainam punar vidhyet.
samyagviddham āmatailapariṣekeṇopacaret | tryahāt tryahād varttiṃ sthūlatarāṅ kurvvīta pariṣekañ ca tam eva ||6||
atha vyapagatadoṣopadrave karṇṇe pravarddhanārthaṃ laghupravarddhanakena muñcet ||7||

    • Cakrapāṇi (1.16.9–13) and Ḍalhaṇa (1.16.10) point out that others read pañcadaśakarṇakṛtayaḥ (instead of pañcadaśasandhānākṛtayaḥ). Ḍalhaṇa (1.16.10) also mentions that some read samunnatasamobhayapāliḥ (instead of vṛttāyatasamobhayapālir) and others do not read saṃkṣiptādayaḥ pañcāsādhyāḥ.
    • The additional verses in A (from bhavanti cātra to śāstravit) were probably also absent in the version of the Suśrutasaṃhitā commented on by Cakrapāṇi, who cites them in his commentary as being "read by some" in regard to the joins (sandhāna) they describe.

    • Ḍalhaṇa (1.16.18) notes that some read rājasarṣapajaṃ in the place of gaurasarṣapajaṃ. This reading appears to have been accepted by Cakrapāṇi (1.16.18–20), who glosses rājasarṣapaja as śvetasarṣapa. Cakrapāṇi also says that some read sarpis in the place of payas. In the compound beginning with arka, Ḍalhaṇi notes that some read arkapuṣpī.
