[2] atha khalu bhagavantam amaravaram ṛṣigaṇaparivṛttam āśramasthaṃ kāśirājaṃ divodāsam aupadhenava vaitaraṇaurabhra puṣkalāvata karavīra gopurarakṣita bhoja suśruta prabhṛtaya ūcuḥ |
[3] bhagavañ śārīramānasāgantubhir vyādhibhir vividhavedanābhighātopadrutān sanāthān anāthavad viceṣṭamānān vikrośataś ca mānavān abhisamīkṣya manasi naḥ pīḍābhavat |

[13] kaumārabhṛtyan nāma kumārabharaṇadhātrīkṣīradoṣasaṃśodhanārthaṃ duṣṭastanyagrahasamutthitānāñ ca vyādhīnām upaśamakaraṇārtham |
[14] agadatantran nāma sarpakīṭadaṣṭaviṣavyañjanārthaṃ vividhaviṣavegopaśamanārthañ ca |

    • The reading of dvidhan might be a corruption of dvidhas, which is a permitted sandhi.

    • kuṭṭha is Prākṛta for "skin disease, leprosy," but this sense does not fit this passage; the word here must refer to an insect or similar creature. In our MSS, kuṭṭha appears to be the transmitted form, possibly Sanskritized to kuṣṭha by the scribe of MS H. It is not obvious how it could be a scribal error for the Vulgate's "kīṭa."

rakṣābhūṣaṇanimittam bālasya karṇau vyadhayet | tau ṣaṣṭhe māse saptame vā śuklapakṣe praśasteṣu tithikaraṇamuhūrtanakṣatreṣu kṛtamaṅgalaṃ †svastivācanan† dhātryaṅke kumāram upaveśyābhisāntvayamānaḥ bhiṣag vāmahastenākṛṣya karṇan daivakṛte chidre dakṣiṇahastena ṛju vidhyet | pūrvan dakṣiṇaṃ kumārasya vāmaṅ kanyāyāḥ | pratanuṃ sūcyā bahalam ārayā ||2|| *
    • Ḍalhaṇa records the alternative reading bhakṣyaviśeṣair vā before bālakrīḍanakaiḥ pralobhya in the vulgate.

    • At this point, witness K is missing a folio, so the rest of this chapter is constructed on the basis of witnesses N and H.

    • Ḍalhaṇa (1.16.6) states that some do not read surūḍhañ cainam punar vidhyet.

    • Cakrapāṇi (1.16.9–13) and Ḍalhaṇa (1.16.10) point out that others read pañcadaśakarṇakṛtayaḥ (instead of pañcadaśasandhānākṛtayaḥ). Ḍalhaṇa (1.16.10) also mentions that some read samunnatasamobhayapāliḥ (instead of vṛttāyatasamobhayapālir) and others do not read saṃkṣiptādayaḥ pañcāsādhyāḥ.
    • The additional verses in A (from bhavanti cātra to śāstravit) were probably also absent in the version of the Suśrutasaṃhitā commented on by Cakrapāṇi, who cites them in his commentary as being "read by some" in regard to the joins (sandhāna) they describe.

    • Ḍalhaṇa (1.16.18) notes that some read rājasarṣapajaṃ in the place of gaurasarṣapajaṃ. This reading appears to have been accepted by Cakrapāṇi (1.16.18–20), who glosses rājasarṣapaja as śvetasarṣapa. Cakrapāṇi also says that some read sarpis in the place of payas. In the compound beginning with arka, Ḍalhaṇi notes that some read arkapuṣpī.
svedito marditaṅ karṇam anena mrakṣayed budhaḥ |
tato'nupadravaḥ samyag balavāṃś ca vivardhate ||15||*
    • N has a kākapāda after ane, but the missing letter (one would expect 'na') has not been supplied in a margin or elsewhere.
ye tu karṇā na vardhante snehasvedopapāditāḥ |
teṣām apāṅge tv abahiḥ kuryāt prachānam eva ca ||16||*
    • Ḍalhaṇa (1.16.23) notes that some read teṣām apāṅgacchedyaṃ hi kāryam ābhyantaraṃ bhavet.
amitāḥ karṇabandhās tu vijñeyāḥ kuśalair iha |
yo yathā suniviṣṭaḥ syāt tat tathā yojayed bhiṣak ||17||*
    • Ḍalhaṇa (1.16.26) states that some read suniviṣṭaḥ (the reading of the Nepalese version) instead of suviśiṣṭaḥ.

surūḍho 'vedano yas tu taṃ karṇaṃ vardhayec chanaiḥ ||

    • Cakrapāṇidatta says that others read nāsāsandhānavidhim here. Ḍalhaṇa (1.16.27–31) states that some read, chinnāṃ tu nāsikāṃ dṛṣṭvā vayaḥsthasya śarīriṇaḥ | nāsānurūpaṃ saṃcchidya patraṃ gaṇḍe niveśayet ||.

snigdho virecyaḥ svayathopadeśaṃ ||
[23] rūḍhañ ca sandhānam upāgataṃ vai
tadvadhraśeṣaṃ tu punar nikṛntet |
hīnam punar vardhayituṃ yateta
samañ ca kuryād ativṛddhamāṃsam iti || om ||
