Bhandarkar Oriental Institute MS 109 of 1881-82

This is a paper manuscript of third kāṇḍa of the Vākyapadīya with the commentary by Helārāja. It was acquired by Franz Kielhorn in 1881 for the Government of Bombay. The text extends from the beginning until a few lines into the commentary on verse 51 (counted as 67 in this manuscript) of the Sādhanasamuddeśa. It is strongly correlated with the manuscript from the Bhau Dāji Memorial, which suggests that they descend from the same archetype. This transcription was made from a black and white facsimile.

upādhiṣv abhāveṣv api sanni¦veśādyākāreṣu sanniveśādiśabdo varttamānaḥ_ paramārthatas tatvād avyatirekād upādhīnāṃ tanniṣkarṣe svarūpasyātmasvarūpatvād ātmany eva satvā tad eva nityam upādhīmallīnatā_ tadā dravyam apy ubhidhāne nihitaṃ bhavati_ tatvam ātmāṃ hy upādhīnāṃ na tu kevalasyātmāna iti vyāpakatvāt sarva evopādhayaḥ 6 tadātmanā satayaivabhidhīyaṃte_ tadā hy upādhīmallinatā tadopādheya upādhayo na bhavaṃti_ tatas tu niṣkarṣe dharmāṃtarāśrayatayā svātaṃtryād upādhitvam eva nopadhitvam iti bhāvaḥ_
yady evaṃ dharmāṇām apy avasthāṃtare dhamirūpatvān nityatve satyatve cākārāṇām anityatvaṃ_ avayavadravyasya tu satyatve nityatve tasya niyamasyā¦nupapattir ity āśaṃkyāha |_
| na tatvātatvayor bheda iti vṛddhebhya āgataḥ_
atatvam iti manyaṃte tatvam evāvicāritam 7 |_
| asyāyam atrārthaḥ na hi dvaitanaye¦ satyāsatye dvarūpe staḥ_ advaitahāniprasaṃgāt_ kiṃ tu pāramārthikam evādvayaṃ tatvaṃ_ tac cānādisiddhāvidyāvilasitasahapramātṛviṣayatayā tathātvam anavabhāLsamānam iti anekavikalpaparighaṭitākārarūpatayā vyavahāram anusarati_ tathā ca_ tad evākāranānātvonnīyamānasvarūpabhedaṃ cakāsti_ nānyat_ tadvyatiriktasyānyasyābhāvāt_

| bhāvābhāvavikārāvabhāsajananaśakti Ltad evāsti nāsti ca_ satāsatopādhikavyavahārasad bhāvatas tan niḥsattāsatvaṃ niḥsadasat paraṃ brahma vyāvahārikaṃ caikānakavyavahāraṃ jātivyaktyātmanā tad eva varttayati_ saṃkhyopādhikam api ca_ evaṃ saṃyogopādhikam api ca_ anyasaṃsargitayāvabhāsanāt_ evaṃ vivekāvasāyaḥ_ tatra yathā sa¦mastavikārātmakā janyamānam ivākāśādyātmanā kūṭastha tad evāvabhāsata iti_ tadātmaiva tatvam ity uktaṃ
evaṃ ca kṛtvā tanmayatvāvirodhino pi vyavahāras tatraivopalīyata ity āha_
tasya śabdārthasaṃbaṃdharūpam ekaṃ hi dṛśyate_
tad dṛśyadarśanaṃ dṛṣṭā darśane ca prayojanam 14 |_
| vācyavācakasaṃbaṃdhānāṃ bhāvato dvayarūpato tatra hy āṃtarataḥ śrutyarthaśakti saṃsṛjyete iti vivartadaśāyāṃ śrutyarthaśākhātmanā tasyaiva vikāsād vācyavācakarūpatayā bhedavatāsau jñānajñeyaivaṃ vidhaṃti_ brahmāṃḍa eva prapaṃcam artho smābhi nirṇīta iti tata evācadhāryaṃ_
tatra sa rūpatayā ca tasyaiva vivarttaḥ_ tathā hi dṛśya tāvad bhāvajātaṃ saṃvidrūpaṃ_ vaidyatvāt_ evaṃ cedam anekaprakāśaparamārthasya prakāśayogād itiḥ_ pūrvakāṃḍaitasiddhau ta vītatya vicāritaṃ_ dṛ¦ṣṭā jīvātmā 'pi cākṛtāvachedo niyataḥ_ satvasaṃsārī bhoktā brahmaiva cetanatvāt_ tato bhedo nupapatter iti traivopapāditaṃ_ anena ca pradhānakartṛkarmarūpakārakaniścayena kārakātasyārūpasiddharūpo vivartapāditaḥ_
darśanaśabdena ca pradhānakriyāni|rddeśenaikakriyāntasyākṣepekṣā sādhyasvabhāvaḥ_ kriyāvivartto py uktaḥ_ kāraṇaśaktyavacchinnā hi kriyāvivartā divaśatayāvacchinnasya mūrttir vivarta iti vivartarūpaṃ viśvaṃ pratipāditaṃ_
prayojanaśabdena ca samābhikriyāphala iti nirdeśa iti sādhyāsādhanaphalarūpatayā viśvasakalanāyām aśeṣavivartānuguṇyaṃ_ brahmaṇa pratipāditasyaikasya sarvabījasya ceyam anekadhā bhoktṛbhoktavyarūpeṇa bhogarūpeṇa ca sthitir iti brahmakāṃḍe pratipāditaṃ_ tatraiva ca satattvanirṇayo smābhir vyavadhāyi_ prakhyoyātmakatvāt_ vyavahārasya nitye śabdārthasaṃbaṃdharūpaṃ dṛśyadarśana ceti bhedenātra nirdeśaḥ_ etac cāvidyāmayaṃ rūpa kathyate_ paramārtha¦kaṃ tu praśāṃtaḥ_ prapaṃcarūpaṃ vakṣyati_ yatra dravyāvaśāt_ dṛśyaṃ ca darśanaṃ cāpi | kalpitaṃ_ tasyaivārthasya nityatvaṃ śritās tyetyaṃtavedina iti
yuktam idaṃ ākṛtasaṃhāre yad avatiṣṭhate_ tat satyam iti tatraitasmāt_ tad anena kiṃcid avatiṣṭhate_ āsad apadam evaitad viśvam āvirbhatīvy āśaṃkyāpi hetubhinnakāraṇapūrvakatvam anvayamukhena dṛṣṭāṃtopakramaṃ saṃdhāyitum āha |_
vikārāpagame satyasuvarṇair kuṃḍalair yathā_
vikārāpagame satyāṃ tathāhuḥ prakṛtiparāṃ¦ 15 |_
| kuṃḍalaṃ svātmavikārāpāye dve kuṇḍale suvarṇam ekasatyaṃm avatiṣṭhate_ yathā tathā vikārāpagame pṛthivyādivikārādigame tv ayinī prakṛLtir abhinnā_ saty avatiṣṭhata ity abhyupeyam_ āhur īti āgamasiddhatā dhanati brahmaṇaḥ_ tathā coktaṃ_ ekam eva ya|d āmnātam iti_ ātmaivedaṃ satyam iti śrutiḥ_ upodbalamātra cārumāna tathā hi nirupākhyād asato parāt prādurbhāvo na yuktaḥ_ ābhāvasya bhāvarūpatvavirodhāt_ na hi śaśaśṛṃgāt kasyacid udbhavo vidyate_ asti ca vijñānarūpatayā jagaty envaya iti pūrvam evaitat_ tathā vakṣyati_ nābhāvo vijāyate bhāvo naikabhāvo hy upākhyatām iti_ cidrūpasya cichaktiḥ_ pariṇāminīti vikāratvābhāvān nedaṃ sāṃkhyanayavatpariṇāmadarśanaṃ_ api tu vivarttapakṣaḥ_ viśeṣaś cānayor vākyapadīye smābhir vyākhyātām iti_ tata eva vādhāyī iha pi saṃbaṃdhasamuddeśe_ vakṣyati kāraṇātaravyudāsaś cādvayasiddhau abhihita iti saty arthitve tata evāvagaṃtavyaḥ_
tad evam ātmaśabdābhidheyasya brahmaṇaḥ_ padārthaparamārtharūpatvāt_ dravyarūpatvam upapādya sarvaśabdavācyatvaṃ tasyaiva nigamayitum āha |_
| vācyā sā sarvaśabdānāṃ śa¦bdāś ca na pṛthak_ tataḥ_
apṛthaktve ca saṃbaṃdhas tayor nānātmanār iva 16 |_
| tadupādhiparikalpitkaṃtabhedabahutayā vyavahārasyāpi vidyābhūyastve pratini¦yatākāro hīyam ānarūpabrahmaiva bhedaṃ brahmaiva sarvavidyāviṣaya ity ukto rthaḥ_ ātmā brahma tatvam ity ukte pi hi śabdaḥ_ samabalaṃvitopādhayo py ātmā¦nam anu parivarttate_ nirupādhino vā viṣayātītahitatvam ity upadiśaṃti brahmavidas tu yadi śabdo pekṣayā tv ātmādiśabdāḥ_ pratyāsannāḥ_ sarvasya ca tanmayatvāchabdā api tadātmakāḥ_ yathācittaṃ ¯¯śakyabhede pi ca pāramārthikaṃ saṃsṛṣṭato traikayātrāyāṃ bhedā satya itīvaśabdaḥ_ ata eva dvisaṃbaṃdhopapatiḥ_
nanu ceṃdrajālam idaṃ yad avadhṛtam upabhedānām api saṃbhāvanāsādhyasaṃbhāvanām anādṛtya tatvam avasīyamānāparamārthatopanadeśanam ity āśaṃkya dṛṣṭāṃtenaitat sādhayitum āha |_
| ātmā paraḥ priyo dveṣyoau vaktā vācyaṃ prayojanā_
viruddhāni yaethaikasya svapne rūpāṇi cetasaḥ 17_
ājanmani tathā nitye paurvāparyavivarjite_
tatve janmādirūpatvaṃ viruddham upalabhyate 18 |_
| svapnāvasthāgataḥ prapaṃco jāgarayā bādhyamānatvāt satya iti sarvabādhābhyupagamaḥ_ tenaiva dṛṣṭāṃtena jāgarīyām api bhāvabhedaḥ_ turīyadaśāyām anananavṛter asatyo vyavasthāpyate_ yat kila sarvavasthāsv anugataṃ tad eva satyaṃ tac ca sa¦vinmātraṃ rūpam avādhyamānam avasthābhedas tv āgamāyitvād bādhito sat sukhaduḥkhādivat_ tathā hi_ rāgādayaḥ sukhādayaś ca svabhāvatvāt savinmātraṃ rūpaṃ na kurvaṃti_ tathā bhedo py anekākāratuṣṭyopahataḥ_
tac ca svapne viruddhakārochekhe sārvatrikī dṛṣṭiḥ_ pratimātraniyat_ vaikalpiki_ti ko bhimāno vyāpārānusārī saṃsārī bhoktā_ su ca bhāvatad eva tanāt_ brahmaiva ca tathā ca tāvati svātaṃtryam ity apīśvaro naṃtyopādānābhāvāt_ nābhyāsyāyaLt_ priyāpriyarūpatayā rāgadveṣādimayena saṃsāramohena paraṃ vibhāgānusārī parasaṃkathanād iti_ tathāhur vedāṃtatattvanipuṇāḥ pravibhajyātmanātmānaṃ sṛṣṭvā bhāvān_ pṛthavidhān_ sarveśvaraḥ_ sarvamayāḥ_ sarvabhoktā pravarttaṃte iti bhokteti pratyagātmasiddhir iyam uktā_ tasya ca sarveśvaratvāt_ brahmarūpatve sṛṣṭisāmarthyam uktaṃ_ sarvaviṣayatvāc cānanyopādānavicitrasvabhāvam āho pajñānam āhuḥ_ jaata eva pravibhajyātmānātmānam iti kartṛkarmabhedābhāvād vaikalpikatvam asvasṛṣṭeḥ sphuṭam uktaṃ_ bāhyopādanā tu jāgarāyām aiśvarīr sṛṣṭir viśvaśabdavācya_ sarvapramātṛviṣayī¦ṇi
sthiratvāsthiratvagrahāvedanānimitas tu bhedaḥ_ avidyāpravṛttirūpatvāt punar asya satyatā samānaiva_ kevalam asatyām avidyā paramo mohaś cichakter āvarako nidrā nāma tadvaśād atraiva bhrāṃtatvābhimāne yā dṛśaṃ_ nanu jananamaraṇarahitaiḥ pravibhakte kūṭasthair vāsmin_ brahmaṇi cidānaṃdarūpasarvam eva jagaj jāgratsvapnādyavasthāgataṃ mūrtikriyāvivarttasaṃsṛtsam anvayicitsāmānyamātraṃ tu paramārtha iti siddhaṃ viruddham upalabhyate iti vedanavidyāyāṃ virodham abhyupaiti_ yat tad eva hy avidyāyā svarūpaṃ ya tad anupapadyamānam apy apagamaṃ nāpaiti_ upapannatve vidhaiva syāt_ tasmād asatyaprapaṃcaprakāśaśaktir brahmaṇo nādisiddhā_ grāhagrāhakayugena svānurūpam upacāratayā jagannāṭyam ātanotītavicārītaramaṇīyam āmanaṃti tatvadṛśaḥ ||_
