University of Oxford, Chandra Shum Shere MS d. 247

This is a paper manuscript in Telugu script in the Chandra Shum Shere collection at the Bodleian Libraries. It was bought, as part of a private collection of 6330 manuscripts in Benares, by the Maharaja Sir Chandra Shum Shere in 1909 and presented to the University of Oxford (Wujastyk 1978, 1). The text extends from the beginning of the Jātisamuddeśa to the end of the Kriyāsamuddeśa, although folios 109, 110 and 111 are missing. It has never before been edited and it was not known to Wilhelm Rau, but it is described in Dominik Wujastyk's Handlist of the Vyākaraṇa manuscripts in the Chandra Shum Shere Collection preserved in the Bodleian Library. The manuscript was bound into book form by the library, and the folios were numbered by Thomas Gambier-Parry in pencil (Wujastyk 1978, 2). Gambier-Parry's foliation begins at the first flyleaf of the book; the first manuscript folio is numbered 3. Moreover, his foliation does not take into account the missing folios. In this transcription, the original Telugu foliation has been followed.

sarvabhāveṣu brahmaṇo dravyalakṣaṇasyābhedāt tadabhidhāyitve śabdānāṃ sarvatra tasyābhāvāt sārvārtthyaṃ śabdāṃtarābhidhīyamānatvaṃ sāṃkaryaṃ prasajyetety atredam ucyate | pratiniyatākāraparicchinnavṛttitvāt sarvārtthatvapratibaṃdhād asaṃkara ity artthaḥ
ghaṭākāropadhāne puraḥsaraṃ ghaṭaśabdena brahmadravyam abhimukhīkriyate paṭākāropadhānena tu paṭaśabdenetyādy upādhirūpopahitavivekitvam abhidhānīyaṃ | tad yathā nāḍikāsuṣiravartmanihitanayanās tadavakāśāvasthitam evārtthabhāgaṃ paśyaṃti tathāvadinaṃ dṛk_śaktirbhi.........r ākārabhedair eva vastūpalakṣyate tathaiva yathādhyavasāyaṃ śabdaniveśāc chabdair abhidhīyata ity artthaḥ |

upādhimātrasvabhāve kvacit sanniveśādyākāLreṣu saṃniveśādiśabdāḥ vartamānāḥ paramārtthatas tatvād avyatirekād upādhīnāṃ tanniṣkarṣe svarūpasyāsvarūpatvād ātmanaiva satvāt tad eva nityam upādhimad dravyam evam abhidhāne bhihitatvaṃ ātmā hy upādhīnāṃ na tu te tasyātmāna iti vyāpakatvāt sarva evopādhayaḥ tadātmanā saṃtas tathaivābhidhīyaṃte yathā hy upādhimadhīnatā tadopādheya upādhayo na bhavaṃti tatas tu nipūrve dharmāṃtarāśrayatayā svātaṃtryād upādhimatva va nopādhitvam ity āśayaḥ |

ayam atrārtthaḥ | na hy advaitanaye satyāsatye dve rūpe staḥ advaitahāniprasaṃt_ kiṃ tu pāramārtikam ekam evādvayaṃ tac cānādisiddhāvidyāvilaṃbitasahapramāpramātṛviṣayatayā yathātatvam anavabhāsamānam anekavikalpaparighaṭitākārarūpatayā vyavahāram avatarati tathā ca tad evākāranānātvonnīyamānasvarūpabhedaṃ cakāsti nānyat_ tadvyatiriktasyānyasvābhāvāt |

vijñānavāde viṣayākārasya tāvato satyatvān nīlādis ta_hi te dharmo jaḍe jñāne saṃbhāvaṃtair atyaṃtam iti jaḍājaḍayor naai kenacid aṃśena sārūpyam ity āha tathā coktaṃ | ekadeśena sārūpye sarvaṃ syāt sarvavedanaṃ | sarvātmanā tu sārūpye jñānam ajñānatāṃ vrajed iti |
atha cāsaṃtavadharmācchuritaṃ vijñānaṃ viśuddhabodhasvabhāvam apy anujñāyā vyavahāre vabhāsata iti | itthaṃ nidarśanāṃtaram āha ||
|| tathā vikārarūpāṇāṃ tatve tyaṃtam asaṃbhavaḥ |
tadātmeva ca tat tatvam atyaṃtam atadātmakaṃ || 10 ||
sāṃkhyāvikṛtaṃ pradhānatatvaṃ sarvavikāragraṃthi bījāvastham abhinnam anupasṛṣṭam eva mahadādivikārarūpaiḥ paramārtthataḥ tad dhi mahadādivikāraśaktiyuktaṃ guṇasāmyāvasthātmakaṃ guṇavaiṣamyavimardavaśopajāyamānavikāranānātvād vihalakṣaṇam eva ayaṃ ca vyahāre mahadādivikārarūpāvadhāraṇena vinā tadupalaṃbhāsaṃbhava iti sarvadeśeṣv avidyānvayinī evam asyākāropradhānena tatvapratibhāsaḥ siddha iti sārtthānvayo gṛhītaḥ |
kathaṃ punar etad avagamyate ākārā asatyāḥ tato nyat satyam ity ata āha ||

ekasaṃkhyopadhīyamānasvarūpaviśeṣaṃ tatvaṃ na bhavati nirupādhitaḥ tatvasya vastuto bhinnatvāt tathaivaikam ity apratīteḥ | nāpi pṛthakpāhitaviśeṣaṃ tadbhinnasyāsatvāt_
nāpi saṃsargopādhikaṃ vibhāgopādhikaṃ vā tato dvitīyasya pramāṇenānupapatteḥ kuto bhinnaṃ viviktaṃ ca kena vā saṃsṛṣṭaṃ syāt
pariṇāmaniṣedhena vivartābhyupagamān na vikṛtaṃ anekabhāvagrāmarūpatayā cādbhutayā vṛtyā vivartanād avikṛtam ity api na śakyate vyavahartum iti- sarvavyapadeśānītatvaṃ paraṃ brahma
atha ca tadātmevāviṣāyām avadhāryata ity āha ||
|| tan nāsti vidyate tac ca tad ekaṃ tat pṛthak_ pṛthak |
saṃsṛṣṭaṃ ca vibhaktaṃ ca viviktaṃ tat tad anyathā || 13 ||
bhāvābhāvavikārāvabhāsajananaśakti tad evāsti ca sattāsattopādhikavyavahāram ahaṃbhāvas tu niḥsattāsattaṃ niḥsadasad paraṃ brahma vyāvahārikaṃ caikānekavyavahāraṃ jātivyaktyātmanā tad eva vartayati saṃkhyopādhikam api ca evaṃ saṃyogopādhikam api anyasaṃsargitayāvabhāsanāt_ evaṃ vivekāvasāyaḥ tatra tadā samastavikārātmanā janyamānam ivākāśādyātmanā kūṭasthayā tad evāvabhāsata iti tadātmaiva tatvam ity uktaṃ |
evaṃ ca kṛtvā sarvasya tanmayatvād virodhino pi vyavahārās tatraivopalīyaṃta ity āha ||
|| tasya śabdārtthasaṃbaṃdharūpam ekasya dṛśyate |
tad dṛśyadarśanaṃ draṣṭā darśane ca prayojanaṃ || 14 ||
vācyavācakasaṃbaṃdhānāṃ bhāvato dvayarūpato_ tatra hy āṃtare tatvaśrutyartthaśaktī saṃsṛjyete iti vivartadaśāyāṃ śrutyartthaśākhātmanā tasyaiva vikāsād vācyavācakarūpatayā bhedāvabhāsau jñānajñeyaivāvidyeti brahmakāṃḍa evoyam arttho smābhir nirṇīta iti tata evāvadhāryaṃ |
dṛśyarūpatayā ca tasyaiva vivartaḥ | tathā hi dṛśyaṃ tāvad bhāvajātaṃ saṃvidupārūḍhaṃ vedyamānaṃ vedyatvād eva cedam anekam aparārtthaprakāśasya prakāśamānatāyogād iti pūrvakāṃḍe dvitīyasiddhau ca vitatya vicāritaṃ draṣṭāpi jīvātmā avidyākṛtāvacchedo niyataḥ satvaṃ sārī bhoktā brahmaiva cetanatvād bhāvato bhedānupapatter iti tatraivāveditaṃ | anena ca pradhānakartṛkarmarūpakārakaniścayena kārakatirasyāpekṣat siddharūpo vivartaḥ pratipāditaḥ
darśanaśabdena ca pradhānakriyānirddetaśakena kriyāṃtarasyāpekṣaṇāt sādhyasvabhāvakriyāvivarto py uktaḥ kālaśaktyavaLcchinnā hi kriyāvivartaḥ divaśaktyavacchinnasya mūrtir vivarta iti mūrtikriyāvivartarūpaṃ viśvaṃ pratipāditaṃ |
prayojanaśabdena ca samatikriyāphala iti nidarśa iti sādhyasādhanaphalarūpatayā viśvasaṃkalanāyām aśeṣavivartānuguṇyaṃ brahmaṇaḥ pratipāditaṃ etasya sarvabījasya ceyam ekadhā bhoktṛbhoktavyarūpeṇābhogarūpeṇa sthitir iti brahmakāṃḍe pratipāditaṃ | tatraiva ca satatvanirṇayo smābhir vyavadhāyi prakhyopākhyātmakatvāt_ ca vyavahārasya dvitve śabdārtthasaṃbaṃdharūpaṃ tad dṛśyadarśanaṃ ceti bhedenātra nirdeśaḥ etac cāvidyāmayaṃ rūpaṃ katthyate pāramārtthikaṃ tu prakāśitaprapaṃcarūpaṃ vakṣyati yatra iṣyāvasā dṛśyaṃ ca darśanaṃ cāvikalpitaṃ tasyaivārtthasya śrityatvaṃ śritās traiyyaṃtavedina iti
yuktam idaṃ ākṛtisaṃhāre ṃte yad avatiṣṭhate tat satyam iti tatraitat syād aṃte na kiṃcid avatiṣṭhate asad apadam evaitad viśvam āvirbhavatīty āśaṃkyāpi hetutābhinnakāraṇapūrvakatvam anvayamukhena dṛṣṭāṃtopakramaṃ sādhayitum āha ||
|| vikārāpagame satyaṃ suvarṇaṃ kuṃḍale yathā |
vikārāpagame satyāṃ tathāhuḥ prakṛtiṃ parām || 15 ||
kuṃḍalasvātmavikārāpāye dve kuṃḍale suvarṇam ekaṃ satyam avatiṣṭhate yathā tathā pṛthivyādivikāravigame nvayinī prakṛtir abhinnā satyāvatiṣṭhata ity upeyaṃ āhur ity āgamapramāṇasiddhatāṃ dhvanati brahmaṇaḥ tathā coktaṃ ekam eva yad ātmātam iti ātmaivedaṃ satyam iti hi śrutiḥ upodbalamātraṃ cānumānaṃ tathā hi nirupākhyād asato parāt prādurbhāvo na yuktaḥ abhāvasya bhāvarūpatvavirodhān na hi śaśaśṛṃgāt kasyacid udbhavo dṛśyate asti ca vijñānarūpatayā jagaty anvaya iti tatpūrvam evaitat | tathā ca vakṣyati | nābhāvo jāyate bhāvo naikabhāvo nupākhyatām iti | tasya cidrūpasya cicchaktir apariṇāminīti vikārābhāvān nedaṃ sāṃkhyanayavatpariṇāmadarśanaṃ api tu vivartapakṣaḥ | viśeṣaś cānayor vākyapadīye smābhir vyākhyātam iti tata evāvadhāryaṃ ihāpi saṃbaṃdhasamuddeśe vakṣyate kāraṇāṃtaravyudāsaś cādvayasiddhau abhihita iti saty artthitve tata evāvagaṃtavyaḥ |
tad evam ātmaśabdābhidheyasya brahmaṇaḥ padārtthaparamārtharūpatvād dravyarūpatvam upapādya sarvaśabdāvācyatvaṃ tasyaiva nigamayitum āha ||
|| vācyā sā sarvaśabdānāṃ śabdāś ca na pṛthak_ tayaḥ |
apṛthaktve ca saṃbaṃdhas tayor nānātmanor iva || 16 ||
tattadupādhiparikalpitabhedabahutayā vyavahārasyāpi vidyābhūyastve pratiniyatākārotthīyamānarūpabhedaṃ brahmaiva sarvaśabdaviṣaya ity ukto rttha ātmā brahma tatvam ityādayo pi śabdāḥ samavalaṃbitopādhayo py ātmānam anu parivartaṃte | nirupādhino vāgviṣayātītatvād vā manasātītaṃ hi tatvam ity upadiśaṃti Lbrahmavida kyayadiśabdāpekṣayā tv ātmādiśabdāḥ pratyāsannāḥ sarva ca tanmayatvāc chabdā api tadātmikāḥ yathāvibhaktaṃ prāk_ abhede pi ca pāramārtthikasaṃvṛto lokayātrāyāṃ bhedo satya itīvaśabdaḥ ata eva dvisasaṃbaṃdhopapattiḥ
nanu ceṃdrajālam idaṃ padavavṛtarūpabhedānām api bhāvānām anādṛtatvam avanīyamānāparamārtthatopadeśanam ity āśaṃkya dṛṣṭāṃtenaitat sādhayitum āha ||
|| ātmā pari priyo dveṣyo vakā vācyaṃ prayojanaṃ ||
viruddhāni yathaikasya svapne rūpāṇi cetasaḥ ||
ajanmani tathā nitye paurvāparye vivakṣite |
tatve janmādirūpatvaṃ viruddham upalabhyate || 18 ||
svapnāvasthāgataḥ prapaṃco jāgarayā bādhyāmānatvād asatya iti sarvavādyabhyupagamaḥ | tenaiva dṛṣṭāṃtena jāgarāyām api bhāvabhedas turīyadaśāyā_m ananuvṛtter asatyo vasthāpyate yat kila sarvāvasthāsv anugataṃ tad eva satyaṃ tac ca saṃvinmātraṃ rūpam abādhyamānam avasthābhedas tv ā_gamāpāyitvād bhādite sat sukhaduḥkhādivat | tathā hi rāgādayaḥ sukhādayaś ca svabhāvatvāt saṃvinmātraṃ rūpaṃ na vikurvaṃti tathāvasthābhedo py anekākāramuṣyopahataḥ
tatra svapne viruddhākārollekhā vaikalpikī dṛṣṭiḥ pratimātṛniyatā vaikalpikīti ko bhimāno vyāpārānusārī saṃsārī bhoktā sa ca bhāvatad acetanatvāt_ brahmaiva tathā bhāti svātaṃtryānimittāpīśvaro nanyopādānābhāvāt_ nābhāsyāpala priyāpriyarūpatayā rāgadveṣādimayena saṃsāramohena paravibhāgānusārī parasaṃkathādiṣu tadāhuḥ vedāṃtatatvanipuṇāḥ pravibhajyātmanātmānaṃ sṛṣṭvā bhāvān_ pṛthagvidhān | sarveśvaraḥ sarvamayaḥ svapne bhoktā pravartata iti bhokteti pratyagātmasṛṣṭir iyam uktā tasya ca sarveśvaratvāt_ brahmarūpatve sṛṣṭisāmartthyam uktaṃ sarvamayatvāc cānanyopādānavicitrabhāvaracanām ātmopajñānām āhuḥ | ata eva pravibhajyātmanātmānam iti kartṛkarmabhedābhāvāc ca vaikalpikatvam asya sṛṣṭeḥ sphuṭam uktaṃ bāhyopādānā tu jāgarāyām aiśvarī sṛṣṭir viśvaśabdavācyā sarvapramātṛsādhāraṇī |
sthiratvāsthiratvāgrahāvedānimittas tu bhedaḥ avidyāpravṛttirūpatvāt punar asatyatatā samanaiva kevalaṃ satyām avidyāyām aparo mohaś cicchakter āpārako nidrā nāma tadvaśād attaiva bhaḥ tatvābhimāne yādṛśāṃ paramārtthadaśāṃ tu janamaraṇarahitaiḥ pravibhakte kūṭasthe parasmin_ brahmaṇi cidānaṃdarūpe sarvam eva jāgaj jāgratsvapnādyavasthāgataṃ mūrtikriyāvivartarūpaṃ saṃsṛtsam anvayicitsāmānyamātraṃ tu paramārttha i siddhaṃ viruddham upalabhyata iti vadann avidyāyāṃ virodham abhyupaiti | tade hy avidyāyāḥ svarūpaṃ yad anupapadyamānam apy āsopagamaṃ nayati upapannatve vidyaiva syāt_ tasmād asatyaprapaṃcaprakāśanaśakti brahmaṇo nādisiddhā grāhyagrāhakayugalasānurūpam uparacayā jagalādyam ātanotīty avicāriLtaramaṇīyām imām apanayaṃti tatvadṛśaḥ || || 18 ||
